The objective of Phase 2 of the Strategy for Water and Land Resources of Iraq (SWLRI) is to complete the development of the integrated strategy for water and land resources that started in Phase 1 of the project. To this extent, the primary goal of the SWRLI project is to put in place the suitable and enduring institutional arrangements for Iraq's water sector. Phase 1 of the project was completed by the Ministry of Water Resources with the support of the USACE and consultants. The approach incorporated principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and adopted a structured planning approach based on: Facts. The requirement to establish a strong evidence base describing the current state of the water resources system
Needs for water supply, flood control, power generation and the environment.
Opportunities for the future, including supply and demand side measures, land use change and the establishment of transboundary agreements between Iraq and upstream countries.
The Ministry of Water Resources held the 8th meeting for steering committee regarding strategic study of water and land resources in Iraq with presence of representative of relevant Ministries and consulting offices.
A meeting will be held in Amman (Jordan) to discuss about the project.
